Above the arch, running the full width of the wall if there is room for it. Fabric that tries to follow an arch never hangs straight, and the curve is the nicest thing about that window anyway. A track set close to the ceiling leaves the arch exposed and lets the panels frame it. If the arch runs right up under the ceiling, we use a low profile track and accept a shorter drop.

Lining slows it and nothing stops it. A cotton sateen lining blocks a good share of the direct sun and keeps the face fabric from fading unevenly, which is the more common complaint. For real protection you want something at the glass, a solar screen or a light-filtering roller under the panels. Draw the panels through the afternoon in the worst months and the room stays usable.

With a wand rather than by hand. A four metre panel gathers real weight, and grabbing the fabric to pull it leaves marks at hand height and drags the pleats out of shape. A wand clipped to the leading carrier draws the whole panel from the floor. Past about five metres of drop, a corded track or a motor is easier on the fabric and on you.

A tight flat weave, and a hem you are willing to write off. Claws pull threads out of anything with a loose slub or a texture, while a smooth cotton often lets a pulled thread be worked back through from the reverse. The real fix is the bottom half. A sill length panel on that one window keeps the fabric out of reach and looks deliberate beside a floor length pair elsewhere.
