We have it worse than most. Summer daylight stretches past 9 PM in southern Ontario. Winter brings early morning light before your alarm goes off. Add in streetlights, headlights, and the general glow of city living, and your bedroom probably isn't as dark as you think.
Shift workers have it worst of all. Trying to sleep at noon with standard blinds is an exercise in frustration.

1. Blackout roller blinds

2. Blackout cellular (honeycomb) blinds
These have a honeycomb structure that traps air for insulation while the blackout fabric blocks light.
Why people like them: Great insulation that cuts energy costs, blocks light and regulates temperature at the same time, soft appearance, and available in different cell sizes.
The catch: They cost more and the fabric is more delicate.
Good for nurseries, master bedrooms, and anyone who pays attention to their heating bill.
3. Blackout roman blinds
Fabric folds into neat pleats when raised, with a blackout liner behind.
Why people like them: They look elegant, the soft fabric fits traditional decor, and you can match them to your room's colour scheme.
The catch: Higher price, more maintenance, and the fabric stacks up at the top when open.
Good for bedrooms where the window treatment is part of the decor.
4. Blackout zebra blinds
Dual-layer blinds where the solid stripes use blackout fabric. Line them up and you get full light blocking.
Why people like them: You get adjustable light control during the day and blackout at night. Modern look.
The catch: Pricier than basic rollers, and the blackout isn't quite as airtight as a solid roller blind.
Good for bedrooms where you also want to control daytime light.
Getting your room actually dark
Here's something most people don't think about: the fabric can be 100% blackout, but if light leaks around the edges, it doesn't matter. We see this constantly.
Side channels. Metal or plastic tracks on both sides of the blind that seal the edges. If you're a light-sensitive sleeper or work nights, these make a huge difference.
Inside vs. outside mount. Inside mount looks cleaner but leaves small gaps. Outside mount overlaps the frame by 3-4 inches on each side and blocks way more light. For serious blackout, go outside mount.
Bottom seal. A brush or rubber strip at the bottom closes the last gap. Small detail, big impact.

Nursery: Blackout roller blinds with side channels. Nap time becomes much easier. Motorized is worth considering here since you can close them without entering the room and waking the baby.
Guest room: Standard blackout roller blinds. Does the job for occasional use without overspending.

Is motorized worth the extra cost?

Questions worth asking before you buy
How sensitive to light are you really? Some people sleep fine with a bit of glow. Others need pitch black. That determines how much you need to invest in side channels and seals.
What's your budget? Roller blinds with side channels give you excellent blackout for the least money. Cellular adds insulation benefits if you're willing to spend more.
Do you want smart home integration? If so, factor in motorized from the start. Retrofitting later costs more.
