The best blind options for sliding patio doors compared. Vertical blinds, motorized blinds, and panel tracks with pros, cons, pricing, and our recommendations.
Patio doors need different window treatments
Sliding patio doors are everywhere in the GTA, from suburban houses to condo balconies. They're also one of the trickiest windows to cover well.
Standard blinds built for regular windows don't work here. The door needs to open and close every day, the covering has to clear the track, and the wide span needs a product designed for horizontal movement.
We've done thousands of patio door installations across the Greater Toronto Area. Here are the three best options and how to pick between them.
Option 1: Vertical blinds
The traditional patio door solution, and still the most widely installed.
How they work
Individual vertical slats hang from a top track. A wand or cord tilts the slats for light control, and drawing the wand slides them to one side for door access.
Pros
- Most affordable option for patio doors
- Proven reliability -- the mechanism is simple and durable
- Full light control -- tilt slats from open to closed at any angle
- Easy to replace individual slats if damaged
- Available in PVC, fabric, and faux wood materials
- Wand operation is child-safe (no looped cords)
- Wide range of colours and textures
Cons
- Can look dated in modern interiors if you choose basic PVC
- Slats can detach from carriers with rough handling
- Noise -- slats rattle in breezes from the open door
- Bottom weighting -- slats need chain weights at the bottom, which can tangle
- Not compatible with smart home systems (manual only in standard configuration)
Best vertical blind materials for patio doors
PVC/Vinyl: Most durable and affordable. Easy to wipe clean. Best for high-traffic areas, kitchens adjacent to patios, and homes with kids and pets.
Fabric: Softer look with more design options. Choose tightly woven fabrics that hold their shape. Better for formal living and dining rooms.
Faux Wood: Premium appearance mimicking real wood. Heavier and more expensive, but creates a high-end look. Best for main living spaces visible from the front of the home.
Our verdict on verticals
Vertical blinds are the reliable, budget-friendly choice. Modern fabric and faux wood options look a lot better than the basic PVC verticals of 20 years ago. If budget is your top concern and you want something proven, verticals are a solid pick.
Option 2: Motorized roller blinds
The modern approach, and it's growing fast.
How they work
A single piece of fabric rolls up and down on a motorized tube mounted above the door. You control it with a remote, smartphone app, or voice command. No manual pulling or tugging.
Pros
- Clean, modern aesthetic -- one smooth fabric surface when lowered
- Quiet motorized operation -- no rattling or clanking
- Smart home integration -- control with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit
- Fabric variety -- solar, light-filtering, blackout, and decorative options
- No slats to break, detach, or tangle
- Excellent for large spans -- available in extra-wide sizes for patio doors
- Child-safe -- completely cordless
Cons
- Higher cost than vertical blinds
- All-or-nothing light control -- the blind is either up, down, or at a set percentage
- Battery maintenance -- rechargeable batteries need charging every 6-12 months
- Patio door must be closed before lowering the blind fully to the floor
- If motor fails, blind is inoperable until repaired (rare but possible)
Best roller fabric options for patio doors
5% Solar Screen: The most popular choice. Blocks heat and UV while maintaining your outdoor view. Excellent for south and west-facing doors.
Light Filtering: Softens incoming light without eliminating the view entirely. Good for north and east-facing doors where heat isn't the main concern.
Blackout: Complete privacy and light blocking. Best for patio doors in bedrooms or TV rooms. Note that blackout rollers look opaque from outside, which may affect the appearance of your patio.
Our verdict on motorized rollers
The premium choice, and quickly becoming the new standard. If you care about aesthetics, smart home integration, and convenience, motorized roller blinds are hard to beat for patio doors. The extra cost over verticals is worth it for main living areas.
Option 3: Panel track blinds
The designer's choice for sliding doors.
How they work
Wide fabric panels (usually 18 to 24 inches each) hang from a multi-channel track and slide horizontally, similar to the patio door itself. Panels overlap slightly when closed and stack neatly to one side when open.
Pros
- Contemporary designer aesthetic -- makes a visual statement
- Smooth, quiet operation -- panels glide on the track
- Wide fabric panels -- no individual slats, creating a clean look
- Can function as room dividers in open-concept spaces
- Available in all fabric types -- solar, sheer, light-filtering, blackout
- Panels are replaceable individually if damaged
- Available motorized for smart home integration
- Excellent for extra-wide openings (double patio doors, wall-to-wall glass)
Cons
- Higher cost than vertical blinds (comparable to motorized rollers)
- No tilt function -- panels are either covering the window or stacked open
- Requires stacking space -- panels stack to one or both sides, taking up wall space
- Track must be mounted to ceiling or header -- not suitable for all installations
- Fewer ready-made options -- usually custom order only
Best panel track configurations
4-panel system: Standard for single patio doors (6 feet wide). Panels stack to one side.
5-6 panel system: For wider openings (8-12 feet). Can stack to both sides or one side.
Split-draw: Panels split in the centre and stack to both sides. Good for symmetrical openings.
Our verdict on panel tracks
Panel tracks are the design-forward choice. If your patio door is in a main living space and you want something that looks intentional and modern, panel tracks deliver. They're also the best option for extra-wide openings where verticals would look out of proportion.

Installation considerations for patio doors
Stacking space
All three options need space for the treatment to clear the door when open:
Measure the wall space beside your patio door to ensure your chosen treatment has room to clear the opening.
Door handle clearance
Make sure the treatment clears the door handle when open. Vertical slats and panel tracks shouldn't catch on the handle as they're drawn past.
Floor clearance
Patio door tracks are slightly raised. Your treatment should clear this track with at least a 1/2 inch gap so it doesn't catch when the door slides.
