How to connect motorized blinds to Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. Setup instructions, voice commands, and automation ideas for your home.
Why connect your blinds to a smart home system?
Motorized blinds on their own are convenient. Connected to your smart home, they're on another level. Once integrated, your blinds can:
- Respond to voice commands ("Alexa, close the bedroom blinds")
- Follow automated schedules (open at sunrise, close at sunset)
- React to sensor data (close when room temperature exceeds a threshold)
- Participate in scenes (a "Movie Night" scene dims lights and closes blinds)
- Help with security (randomize open/close patterns when you're away)
This guide walks through the setup process for Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit.
Before you start: compatibility check
Not all motorized blinds work with all smart home platforms. Before purchasing, confirm compatibility:
What you need
- Motorized blinds with smart home capability (Wi-Fi or Zigbee/Z-Wave hub)
- A smart home hub or bridge (some blinds connect directly via Wi-Fi; others need a manufacturer bridge)
- Stable Wi-Fi network covering the window locations
- The manufacturer's app installed on your smartphone
Common motor brands and compatibility
Most quality motorized blind motors support at least two of the three major platforms. During your Blinds Planet consultation, we'll confirm which motors and integration options work best for your setup.
Key distinction: Some motors connect directly to Wi-Fi (simpler setup), while others use Zigbee or Z-Wave protocols and require a hub or bridge (more reliable for large installations).
Setting up with Amazon Alexa
Step 1: Install the manufacturer's app
Download your blind motor manufacturer's app and complete the initial setup:
1. Create an account
2. Put the motor into pairing mode (usually by holding the program button for 5 seconds)
3. Connect the motor to your Wi-Fi network through the app
4. Test basic control (open, close, set position) through the app
Step 2: Link to Alexa
1. Open the Amazon Alexa app on your phone
2. Go to More > Skills & Games
3. Search for your blind manufacturer's skill
4. Tap Enable and sign in with your manufacturer account
5. Alexa will discover your devices automatically
Step 3: Organize your devices
1. Go to Devices in the Alexa app
2. Assign each blind to the correct room (Bedroom, Living Room, etc.)
3. Rename blinds for easy voice control (e.g., "Bedroom Blinds" instead of "Motor_A3F2")
Step 4: Voice commands
Once everything's connected, you can use these commands:
- "Alexa, open the living room blinds"
- "Alexa, close the bedroom blinds"
- "Alexa, set the office blinds to 50 percent" (partial position)
- "Alexa, close all blinds" (if grouped)
Step 5: Create routines
Alexa routines let you automate your blinds based on triggers:
- "Good Morning" routine: Open all blinds at 7:00 AM on weekdays
- "Goodnight" routine: Close all blinds when you say "Alexa, goodnight"
- Sunset trigger: Close blinds automatically at sunset (time adjusts seasonally)
- Temperature trigger: Close south-facing blinds when outdoor temp exceeds 25C (requires a compatible sensor)
Setting up with Google Home
Step 1: Initial motor setup
Same as Alexa: install the manufacturer's app, pair the motor, and connect to Wi-Fi. Test control through the app first.
Step 2: Link to Google Home
1. Open the Google Home app
2. Tap the + icon and select Set up device
3. Choose Works with Google
4. Search for your blind manufacturer
5. Sign in with your manufacturer account
6. Google will import your devices
Step 3: Assign to rooms
1. Each blind will appear under Devices
2. Assign to the correct room in your Google Home structure
3. Rename for clarity
Step 4: Voice commands
- "Hey Google, open the kitchen blinds"
- "Hey Google, close the blinds in the bedroom"
- "Hey Google, set the living room blinds to 75 percent"
- "Hey Google, are the blinds open?" (status check)
Step 5: Create automations
In the Google Home app under Automations:
- Household routines: "Good morning" opens blinds, "Bedtime" closes them
- Scheduled automations: Open at a specific time on specific days
- Sunrise/sunset triggers: Adjust blinds based on actual daylight
- Presence-based: Close all blinds when everyone leaves home (requires phone location)
Setting up with Apple HomeKit
Step 1: Check HomeKit compatibility
Apple HomeKit has stricter certification requirements. Make sure your blind motor explicitly says it supports HomeKit. Some motors that work with Alexa and Google don't support HomeKit.
Step 2: Add to HomeKit
1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad
2. Tap + and select Add Accessory
3. Scan the HomeKit code (printed on the motor or in the app)
4. Follow the prompts to name the accessory and assign it to a room
Step 3: Siri voice commands
- "Hey Siri, close the bedroom blinds"
- "Hey Siri, open the blinds to 50 percent"
- "Hey Siri, close all the blinds"
Step 4: Create automations and scenes
In the Home app:
- Scenes: Create "Movie Time" (close all living room blinds, dim lights) or "Wake Up" (open bedroom blinds to 30%)
- Automations: Trigger based on time, sunrise/sunset, arrival, departure, or sensor data
- Adaptive lighting: Pair with HomeKit-compatible lights for coordinated ambiance

Energy management
Program blinds to work with your heating and cooling:
- Winter mornings: Open south-facing blinds after sunrise to capture passive solar heat
- Winter evenings: Close all blinds at sunset to retain interior heat
- Summer afternoons: Close west-facing blinds at 2 PM to block peak heat gain
- Summer mornings: Keep east-facing blinds closed until 10 AM
These automations can noticeably cut energy costs, especially in GTA homes with big south or west-facing windows.
Security when away
Sleep
- Bedtime: All bedroom blinds close fully at your designated bedtime
- Wake-up: Blinds open gradually over 15 minutes starting 30 minutes before your alarm
- Nap mode: Voice command closes bedroom blinds mid-day ("Alexa, nap time")
Whole-home scenes
- "Leaving Home": Close all blinds, lock doors, arm security, set thermostat to away
- "Movie Night": Close living room blinds, dim lights, turn on TV
- "Guests Arriving": Open common area blinds, turn on entryway lights
Troubleshooting common issues
Blinds not responding to voice commands
1. Check that the blind is connected to Wi-Fi (test from manufacturer app)
2. Verify the skill/link is still active in your smart home app
3. Confirm the blind is assigned to the correct room
4. Check for firmware updates on the motor

Battery-powered motor tips
Most condo and residential motorized blinds use rechargeable batteries:
Professional installation makes it easier
DIY setup is possible, but there are real advantages to professional installation for smart blinds:
- Wi-Fi assessment ensures signal reaches all window locations
- Motor programming is done correctly the first time
- Smart home linking is tested and verified on-site
- Automation setup is configured to your daily routine
- Training so every household member knows how to use the system
