Bedrooms on the coldest elevation, then whatever room you sit in at night. Those are where you actually notice a cold pane, and where a shade stays down for hours doing its job. Halls, stairs and rooms you only pass through do not repay it. If one room still has old single glazed sash and the rest are newer, start there regardless of what the room is used for.

Inside the frame, ending at the sill, so the fabric never lands on the cushion. A shade running long onto a seat gets crushed at the hem and the bottom rail sits crooked. If the frame does not give us depth for an inside mount, we go outside and stop the shade at the top of the seat, which leaves a small light gap at the sill and is still the better outcome.

The cordless versions are, and that is what we fit. Both rails move by hand with no operating cord anywhere on the wall, so there is nothing hanging for a child to reach. The older corded top down designs are a different matter and should be replaced rather than lived with. One caution: the bottom rail on a cordless shade takes a firm hand, which small children generally do not have.

Polyester holds its colour well and modern fabrics do not yellow the way old vinyl did. What you get instead is slow, even fading on the sun side, which is hard to see until you compare an old shade against a new one. A shade left down all day on a south window ages faster than one that spends the day raised. Bright white shows the change least, in my experience.
