One per section, so three on a standard three-sided bay. We mount each inside its own opening, which keeps the shades clear of the angles and the corners tidy. Running one shade across a bay does not work, because the fabric has to fold at the mullions. The flanking sections often sit at an angle other than ninety degrees, so we take that angle at the measure and cut the headrails to suit.

It comes white as standard and it shows more than people expect on an outside mount, where the rail sits on the wall rather than tucked up inside a frame. We can supply it in a bone or a bronze, or wrapped in the shade fabric so it disappears into the blind. Inside a deep casing none of this matters. On a run of five shades along one wall it is the first thing you see.

They can and it does not. A pleat that has been leaned on, shut in a window or pushed sideways while raised keeps the dent, because the cell is a bonded shape rather than a fold that can be pressed back. There is no repair for it worth doing. Where a shade sits behind a sofa or beside a door that swings, we mount it above the opening so the fabric hangs clear of whatever is going to hit it.

Cordless spring lift is fine up to about the height you can reach. Above that you either use a pole with a hook on the bottom rail, which works but is awkward on a wide shade, or a motor in the headrail. Most people motorize the upper units and leave the lower windows cordless. If the upper glass is fixed and only there for light, some rooms need nothing up top at all.
