Two, in almost every case. A roller that wide needs a heavy tube to stay straight, and the fabric still tends to sag and track sideways over time. Splitting it gives two lighter blinds that roll evenly, and it lets you drop one side against low sun while the other stays up. We line the seam up with a mullion where the window has one, so the split looks intentional.

The chain is the weak point, not the fabric. Children swing on it and dogs catch it going past, which pulls the clutch out of alignment or snaps a link. A chain tensioner screwed to the wall or frame fixes the loop in place, and it is required for child safety anyway. In a playroom or a back hall where traffic is constant, a motorized tube removes the chain altogether.

Until the light outside drops below the light inside, and then it goes. A screen works on contrast, so through the day the weave disappears and the trees read almost normally. At dusk that flips over the course of about twenty minutes and you start seeing the mesh instead of the yard. People who sit in that room at night usually end up raising the screen after dinner, which is worth knowing before you choose one for a family room.
