How Window Blinds Protect Your Furniture from UV Damage

How Window Blinds Protect Your Furniture from UV Damage

That faded patch on your hardwood floor or the bleached arm of your couch? UV damage through your windows. Here is how the right blinds stop it from getting worse.

The sun is slowly destroying your stuff

Take a look at the area of your hardwood floor near a south-facing or west-facing window. Compare the colour to the part of the floor that is always covered by furniture or a rug. See the difference? That is UV damage, and it happens so gradually that most people do not notice until the damage is obvious.

UV radiation from sunlight fades and degrades almost everything in your home: hardwood floors, leather and fabric furniture, artwork, photographs, rugs, and even paint on walls. The Ontario sun is stronger than many people realize. Even in winter, UV levels can cause damage through south-facing windows, and in summer, the intensity increases significantly.

Your windows let visible light in, which is great. But they also let UV radiation in, and that is what causes the damage.

How much damage UV actually causes

The numbers are worth knowing:

Hardwood floors can show visible fading in as little as 6 months of direct sun exposure. Oak tends to darken, while cherry and walnut can fade. The damage is permanent. You cannot sand it back to the original colour without refinishing the entire floor.

Fabric furniture fades unevenly. The arm of a couch that catches afternoon sun will be a different colour than the rest of the cushion within a year. Synthetic fabrics resist fading better than natural fibers, but nothing is immune with enough exposure.

Leather furniture dries out, cracks, and fades from UV exposure. That "aged leather" look people pay extra for is not the same as sun damage. UV degradation weakens the leather and shortens its lifespan.

Artwork and photographs fade permanently. Pigments break down under UV light, and once the colour is gone, it does not come back. Museums use UV-filtering glass for exactly this reason.

Hardwood flooring costs in the GTA typically run $8 to $15 per square foot installed. If UV damage means refinishing the floors in your main-floor living area, you are looking at a significant expense.

Standard glass blocks almost nothing

A common misconception is that windows themselves block UV rays. Standard single-pane glass blocks zero UVA rays (the ones that cause most fading damage). Double-pane windows are slightly better, blocking some UV, but still let the majority of damaging radiation through.

Low-E glass (common in newer GTA builds) does a better job, blocking a larger percentage of UV rays. But even low-E glass is not a complete solution. And if you live in an older home with original windows, you likely have very little built-in UV protection.

How blinds protect against UV

Window blinds add a physical barrier between the sun and your interior. But not all blinds provide the same level of UV protection. The effectiveness depends on the fabric type, the opacity, and how the blind is positioned.

Blackout blinds: maximum UV protection

Blackout roller blinds block virtually 100% of UV rays when fully closed. Nothing gets through. This is the maximum protection you can get from a window treatment.

The trade-off: You also block all visible light. Blackout blinds in a living room during the day make the room dark. That defeats the purpose of having windows.

When it makes sense: Rooms that get intense afternoon sun (west-facing windows in summer). Rooms with valuable furniture, artwork, or flooring that you want to protect during peak sun hours. You can open them when the sun is not directly hitting the window and close them during the worst 3-4 hours.

Solar screen fabrics: the best balance

Solar screen or sunscreen roller blinds are the smartest choice for UV protection without sacrificing daylight. They are woven to block UV rays while still allowing visible light through.

How they work: The fabric is a tight mesh that filters light by percentage. A 5% openness solar screen blocks about 95% of UV and 95% of glare while still giving you a view outside and natural light inside. A 3% openness screen blocks even more while still maintaining some visibility.

UV protection by openness factor:

  • 1% openness: blocks roughly 99% of UV, very limited visibility through
  • 3% openness: blocks roughly 97% of UV, maintains daytime view
  • 5% openness: blocks roughly 95% of UV, good visibility and light
  • 10% openness: blocks roughly 90% of UV, maximum light and view
  • For furniture and floor protection, a 3% or 5% openness screen gives you serious UV blocking while keeping the room bright and maintaining the view outside. This is the option we recommend most often for GTA homeowners concerned about fading.

    Zebra blinds: adjustable UV control

Zebra blinds give you flexible UV protection because you can adjust the balance between sheer and opaque panels throughout the day.

Fully open (sheer panels aligned): Lets light in but the sheer fabric still blocks some UV. Offers moderate protection.

Fully closed (opaque panels aligned): Blocks the majority of UV rays. Not quite as effective as a dedicated blackout or solar screen, but significant protection.

Partially adjusted: You can fine-tune based on the sun's position and intensity. More closed during peak afternoon sun, more open in the morning or on cloudy days.

The advantage is flexibility. Rather than choosing between "protected but dark" and "bright but exposed," you adjust throughout the day.

Which rooms need UV protection most?

Not every window in your house needs the same level of protection. Focus your effort on the highest-risk areas first.

    South-facing windows

In the GTA (latitude around 43.7 degrees north), south-facing windows get the most consistent sun exposure year-round. In winter, the low sun angle means direct sunlight penetrates deep into the room, reaching floors and furniture well beyond the window.

Priority level: highest. Solar screen blinds or UV-filtering roller blinds on south-facing windows protect the largest amount of floor and furniture surface area.

    West-facing windows

Afternoon sun through west-facing windows is intense, especially from May through September. The low angle of late-afternoon sun creates long shadows and reaches far into the room.

Priority level: high. These windows benefit from solar screens during the day and blackout or room-darkening blinds during peak afternoon hours.

    East-facing windows

Morning sun is less intense than afternoon sun, but it still causes UV damage over time. If your bedroom or home office faces east, the furniture near those windows is getting daily UV exposure from sunrise until late morning.

Priority level: moderate. Solar screen blinds are a good choice, especially if you like the morning light and do not want to block it completely.

    North-facing windows

North-facing windows get the least direct sun. UV damage is minimal compared to other exposures.

Priority level: low. Standard blinds of any type will provide adequate protection. You probably do not need UV-specific products here.

    Protecting hardwood floors specifically

Hardwood is the most commonly damaged surface we see in GTA homes. Here are specific tips:

Rotate your rugs and furniture periodically. Even with blinds, shifting things around ensures the floor fades evenly rather than in patches.

Use solar screen blinds on any window where direct sun hits the floor. Even partial UV blocking dramatically slows fading.

Close blinds during peak sun hours. If you know the sun hits your living room floor from 2 PM to 5 PM, close the blinds during that window. You get daylight the rest of the time and protect the floor when it matters most.

Consider the floor finish. Oil-finished hardwood tends to change colour more uniformly than polyurethane-finished hardwood. If you are choosing new flooring, the finish affects how UV damage shows.

    The cost of not protecting

When you add up the potential costs of UV damage over 5-10 years:

  • Hardwood floor refinishing (main floor): significant investment
  • Reupholstering a faded sofa: hundreds to over a thousand dollars
  • Replacing sun-damaged leather furniture: major expense
  • Replacing faded rugs and artwork: adds up quickly
  • A set of solar screen or UV-filtering blinds for your main living areas costs a fraction of any one of these replacements. It is straightforward math.
