A pleated blind is one layer of fabric folded into a concertina. A cellular is two layers bonded so each pleat closes into a tube, and that tube of trapped air is the whole point of the product. They look similar from across a room and behave differently at the glass in January. Pleated costs less and there is nothing wrong with it on an interior window that never gets cold.

On the lower floors it is the feature people keep thanking us for. The shade drops from the top, so daylight comes over the top rail while the bottom half of the window stays covered from anyone at street level. The trade-off is a second set of controls and a slightly taller head rail. High up, with nothing looking in, it is usually not worth the extra.

It can be motorized. The motor sits in the head rail rather than a tube, runs off the same radio remote as our roller motors and charges from a USB port. Cordless spring lift covers most windows and needs nothing but a hand on the rail. We suggest a motor when the window sits above furniture or a stairwell, or when there are enough shades that walking the room gets old.

They come down in minutes and the brackets leave two small holes. Whether they fit the next window is the real question, because the shades are cut to the millimetre for the opening they were made for. A workroom can narrow a shade a little, never widen it. If you expect to move, an outside mount sized generously gives you a better chance of reusing it somewhere.
