Usually, because the frame is often the weak point, more than the pane itself. Even a good window loses heat at its edges and around the sash, and the shade covers the whole opening. On the lake side you also get wind pressure driving cold air through any gap it finds, and a cell shade sitting close to the frame slows that down.

Casement handles are the usual obstacle in these houses. Where the frame is deep enough, we mount inside with a spacer that brings the shade forward past the crank. Where it is not, the shade goes outside on the trim and hangs clear. The handle still turns either way. We check the swing on site before anything gets ordered.

They do. The cordless system uses a spring balanced to the weight of the fabric, so the shade stops wherever you leave it on the window. No cord hangs anywhere for a child to reach from a bed. On a drop above roughly two metres we suggest a motor instead, because the bottom rail gets hard to reach.

Not on its own. The fabric is treated and the cells breathe, so humidity passes through instead of settling inside them. Where we do see trouble is condensation off cold glass in January, which can wick into the bottom of a shade left touching a wet sill. Set the shade to stop a centimetre above the sill and it stays dry.
