We measure from the finished floor to the underside of the headrail at the door itself, then cut the vanes to leave roughly 12 millimetres of gap. Village houses often have a raised sill or a step down to a deck, so the gap that works at one end of the track can be wrong at the other. That measurement gets taken across the full opening.

With room-darkening PVC vanes, yes. They overlap along the edges when closed, so what gets through is a fraction of what a fabric vane lets in. On the lake side that matters more than it sounds, because reflected light off the water keeps a room bright well after the sun has moved off the glass.

The part that fails sits up inside the headrail. A vane that swings hard against its neighbour strains its carrier clip, and after a few summers one of them lets go. PVC handles gusts better than loose fabric does. The bottom chain is the real fix, since it ties the set together and stops the swing before it starts.

The wand version carries no loop at all. You turn the vanes with a rigid stick and slide the set along by hand, so nothing hangs where a child can reach it. That is what we fit by default in units with young kids. If a door is wide enough to want the cord and chain version, the loop gets anchored to the wall with a tension device.
