A full height lined pair on a three metre run gets to eight or ten kilos once the heading and the weights are in, and it is a live load because you pull on it twice a day. That is well beyond what a wall plug in plaster will hold. We fix into the framing above the casing wherever it exists, and where it does not, into toggles that spread the load behind the lath rather than crumbling it.

Dressing is setting the folds by hand so each one falls the same way top to bottom, then tying the panel loosely for a few days while the fabric learns it. We do it on install day. After that it holds unless somebody bunches the panel against the wall, which everyone does eventually. Ten minutes once a year puts it right. A panel that has never been dressed hangs in random waves and always looks like it came off a shelf.

The lining takes the ultraviolet hit instead of your face fabric, and it can be replaced on its own years later. It also gives the panel enough body to hang in proper folds. Unlined linen on a bright river facing window will fade unevenly within a few seasons.

In a room with high ceilings and deep trim, often yes, and for a practical reason as much as a period one. A pelmet closes the gap at the top where warm air escapes down the back of the panel, which is worth something on a big old window. It also hides the track entirely. Where it goes wrong is in a room with an ordinary ceiling, since a deep box then eats the wall and the window looks squat.
