A room-by-room guide to picking the right blinds. Practical recommendations for living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices.
Introduction
Not every room in your home has the same needs when it comes to window treatments. Your kitchen requires moisture resistance, your bedroom demands blackout performance, and your living room needs versatile light control for entertaining and relaxing.
At Blinds Planet, we've completed installations in over 5,200 homes across the GTA. Here's what we've learned about matching the right blinds to each room in your home.
Living room
Your living room is where you entertain, relax, and spend most of your waking hours at home. It also tends to have the most (and largest) windows.
What you need:
- Versatile light control for TV watching, reading, and entertaining
- Aesthetic impact since this room sets the tone for your home
- UV protection to prevent furniture and flooring from fading
Best choice: Zebra blinds
Zebra blinds are our top pick for living rooms. Their alternating sheer and solid panels let you fine-tune light throughout the day without fully blocking your view. In the morning, align the sheer panels for soft, diffused light. In the evening, shift to the solid panels for privacy.
Runner-Up: Motorized roller blinds with light-filtering fabric. Ideal for large or hard-to-reach living room windows, and they add a modern touch when paired with smart home control.
Pro tip for GTA homeowners:
If your living room faces south toward Lake Ontario, you'll get strong afternoon sun year-round. Pair your zebra blinds with UV-blocking fabric to protect hardwood floors without sacrificing the view.
Bedroom
Sleep quality depends directly on light control. This is the one room where you shouldn't compromise on blackout capability.
What you need:
- Complete blackout for uninterrupted sleep
- Quiet operation that won't wake light sleepers
- Child safety if applicable (cordless options)
Best choice: Blackout roller blinds
A good blackout roller blind with side channels delivers complete darkness. For maximum light blocking, choose an outside mount that overlaps the window frame by 3-4 inches on each side.
Runner-up: Blackout cellular blinds. These add insulation benefits (cooler in summer, warmer in winter) while achieving near-total darkness.
For children's rooms:
Always go cordless or motorized. Canadian safety standards require cordless blinds in children's rooms, and motorized blinds eliminate hazards entirely. Programmable schedules can also help with sleep routines, gradually opening in the morning as a gentle wake-up.
Master bedroom upgrade:
Consider motorized blackout blinds with a sunrise simulation schedule. Program them to gradually open 15 minutes before your alarm, letting natural light wake you. Clients in Vaughan and Richmond Hill tell us this is one of their favourite features.
Kitchen
Kitchens need window treatments that can handle moisture, grease, cooking splatters, and frequent cleaning while still looking sharp.
What you need:
- Moisture and heat resistance
- Easy to clean (grease and food splatter are inevitable)
- Light control without sacrificing task lighting for cooking
Best choice: Moisture-resistant roller blinds
PVC-coated or vinyl roller blinds are made for kitchen environments. They wipe clean with a damp cloth, resist moisture warping, and come in styles that look far better than the vinyl blinds of decades past.
Runner-Up: Faux wood blinds. They offer the warm aesthetic of real wood without the moisture vulnerability. Perfect for kitchens in new-build GTA homes where the builder installed a standard window over the sink.
What to avoid in kitchens:
- Fabric cellular blinds near cooking areas (absorb grease and odours)
- Real wood blinds near sinks or stoves (warping risk)
- Floor-length treatments near ranges (fire safety concern)
Kitchen window placement matters:
Over-the-sink windows benefit from top-down/bottom-up blinds that let you open the top for light while keeping the bottom closed for splash protection.
Bathroom
Bathrooms are the most demanding room for window treatments. High humidity, direct water exposure, and the need for solid privacy all come into play.
What you need:
- Waterproof or highly moisture-resistant materials
- Maximum privacy at all times
- Mould and mildew resistance
Best choice: PVC/vinyl roller blinds
Fully waterproof PVC roller blinds are the only window treatment we recommend for bathrooms with showers or tubs near windows. They won't warp, won't grow mould, and give you complete privacy.
Runner-Up: Faux wood blinds for bathrooms without direct water exposure (powder rooms, half-baths). They offer a more upscale look while still handling humidity well.
Humidity-prone homes in Ontario:
Older homes in Toronto's east end, Oakville, and lakefront areas of Mississauga tend to have higher indoor humidity. In these homes, even bathroom blinds away from direct water should be moisture-resistant. We've seen fabric blinds develop mould within a single Ontario winter in poorly ventilated bathrooms.
Ventilation pairing:
No blind can fight humidity alone. Pair your bathroom blinds with an exhaust fan rated for your bathroom's square footage. Run the fan for 20 minutes after every shower to protect both your blinds and your walls.
Home office
With remote work here to stay across the GTA, home offices need window treatments that manage screen glare, video call lighting, and focus throughout the workday.
What you need:
- Glare reduction for computer screens
- Adjustable light for video calls
- Some natural light to prevent eye strain and boost mood
Best choice: Zebra blinds
Zebra blinds work really well in home offices. Position the sheer panels to diffuse harsh direct light while keeping your space bright. On a video call, adjust to control backlighting. When you need to concentrate, shift to the solid panels to cut down on distractions.
Runner-Up: Light-filtering roller blinds. A single-opacity option works well if your office doesn't get direct sun, providing consistent diffused light throughout the day.
Video call lighting tip:
Position your desk so the window is in front of you or to the side, never behind you. Then use your zebra blinds to control the intensity. Sheer-aligned zebra blinds provide the most flattering and even light for camera-based meetings.
Dining room
Dining rooms are about atmosphere and flexibility, from bright weekend brunches to intimate dinner parties.
What you need:
- Elegant appearance that complements your dining furniture
- Adjustable ambiance for different occasions
- UV protection for wooden dining tables
Best choice: Zebra blinds or motorized roller blinds
In the dining room, aesthetics matter as much as function. Zebra blinds in a neutral linen-look fabric add texture and warmth. Motorized roller blinds in a coordinating colour offer a clean look that lets your dining set take centre stage.
Condo dining rooms:
In GTA condos, the dining area often shares open-concept space with the living room. Choose the same blind style across both areas for visual continuity. Many of our Mississauga and downtown Toronto condo clients use zebra blinds throughout their main living space for a cohesive designer look.
Basement
Basements typically have small, high-set windows that don't get much natural light. The goal here is to make the most of whatever light you get.
Best choice: Cordless light-filtering cellular blinds
Cellular blinds in a light-filtering fabric brighten the space while giving you privacy. The cordless design is practical for high-set windows, and the insulating properties help with basement temperature, a common issue in Ontario homes.
