A made panel has the lining sewn in by hand at the sides rather than bagged through a machine, so the leading edge hangs plumb instead of curling, and the hem is deep enough to carry its own weight with the corners mitred and weighted. The heading is sewn through a stiffened band. None of that is visible from the doorway. All of it is why one hangs straight after ten years and the other does not.

They earn their place on a panel you leave open most of the time, which in a front room is nearly always. A holdback pulls the fabric clear of the glass and gives the fold a shape, so the panel looks intended rather than shoved aside. Set it about two thirds of the way down and just outside the casing. On a panel you draw every evening they get in the way, and we leave them off.

Fabric holds odour, and a heavy lined panel holds more of it than a sheer does. Your range hood matters more than any fabric choice you make. If the dining end is open to the kitchen, an unlined cotton or linen panel that washes cold is the sensible pick, because you can deal with it yourself whenever it needs it. Pleated lined panels go to a dry cleaner, and that is the trade off for how they hang.
