Five or six years before it looks tired, against fifteen in a house somebody owns. Almost none of that is wear on the mechanism. PVC does not mind warm air, and nothing warps at the temperature a register puts out. What you get instead is movement, since the vanes hang free and a register aimed straight up the glass sets the whole set drifting every time the furnace runs. A deflector turning that air into the room stops it. Fabric vanes hang heavier and move less, which is one small argument for them over a vent.

They turn, but there is no point once they are bunched, because a stacked vane has its neighbour pressed against it and all you get is a thick column of plastic rotating in place. Turn first, then traverse. The habit worth building is closing the vanes flat before you pull them across, since that is also the position where the carriers take the least strain going back and forth.

Not much on their own, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. A single layer of PVC or thin fabric has almost no mass and sound goes through it. What actually helps is the window itself and then heavy lined drapery hung over the door, which adds mass and absorbs some of the reflection inside the room. Verticals give you the light and privacy control, not the quiet.
