Grey walls and white trim give you room to work. We usually pull the band colour off the trim rather than the wall, so a soft white or oyster band reads as part of the window instead of a block of fabric sitting in it. If the floor is a warm oak, a greige band keeps the room from looking cold. Bring a paint chip to the measure and we will hold samples against the actual light.

It changes the fabric more than the blind. Film already cuts a share of the heat and the glare, so a very tight sheer band on top of it can leave the room dimmer than you want on an overcast day. We would go one step more open on the sheer than we otherwise might. Keep the blind off the glass as well, since heat builds between film and fabric on a sealed unit.

Around 40 centimetres wide is the practical floor. Below that the cassette and the end caps take up so much of the opening that the fabric looks like an afterthought, and the chain sits awkwardly close to the frame. On a narrow bathroom or stair window we would usually suggest a plain roller or a cellular shade instead. Nothing about the mechanism fails at that size. It just stops looking like it belongs there.

It can, up to a point. A single zebra on a slider gets heavy, and the bands can drift out of line on very wide rolls, so past about two and a half metres we prefer two blinds meeting at the middle of the door. That also means you only lift the half you walk through. Check the handle clearance too, because a cassette on the frame can sit in the way of a sliding latch.
