Basements have their own set of problems: small windows, high humidity, and not enough light. Here are the blinds that actually work below grade.
Basements are a different animal
Basement windows are nothing like the rest of your house. They are smaller, often at ground level or below, and the room behind them tends to be cooler and damper than the floors above. Picking blinds based on what works upstairs is a mistake that leads to mould, moisture damage, and coverings that do not fit the window wells.
After 30 years of fitting blinds across the GTA, we can tell you that basements are one of the spaces where product choice matters most.
The three basement challenges
Challenge 1: Moisture and humidity
Basements are naturally more humid. Concrete walls wick moisture from the soil, and the cooler temperatures mean condensation forms more easily, especially on and around windows. Window coverings that trap moisture or absorb water become a mould problem.
What this means for blind selection:
Challenge 2: Small windows and limited light
Basement windows are typically half the size of main-floor windows, sometimes smaller. You want to maximize every bit of light that comes through, which means choosing a blind that does not block the glass when open.
Products that maximize light when open:
- Roller blinds roll up to a compact tube at the top, leaving the full glass exposed
- Zebra blinds can shift to their sheer position for maximum light while still covering the window
- Top-down bottom-up blinds let you drop the top for light while keeping the bottom closed for privacy
Avoid products with large stacking heights that block the top portion of an already small window.
Challenge 3: Privacy at ground level
Basement windows sit at foot level from outside. Anyone walking past can look right in, and at night with lights on inside, you are on full display. Privacy is usually more critical here than on upper floors.
Full privacy options:
Best blinds for basements
Moisture-resistant roller blinds (our recommendation)
PVC or polyester roller blinds check every basement box. They resist moisture, clean easily, roll up tight to maximize light, and provide full privacy when closed. For basement bedrooms (legal suites, guest rooms), blackout rollers are the clear pick.
Zebra blinds for finished basements
If your basement is a finished living space (rec room, home theatre, office), zebra blinds give you the light adjustability that makes the space feel less like a basement. The sheer panels bring in soft natural light, and the solid panels give you privacy when you need it.
Choose a moisture-resistant fabric option. Not all zebra blind fabrics are created equal, and some of the more decorative options are not suited for below-grade humidity levels.
Vertical blinds for egress windows and walkouts
If your basement has larger egress windows or a walkout, vertical blinds work well. They handle the wider openings that walkout basements often have, and PVC vanes are completely waterproof.
What about basement window wells?
Many GTA basements have window wells: recessed areas outside the window that sit below grade. These create a couple of additional issues:
- Debris accumulation in the well can block light even further. Keeping wells clean helps your blinds do their job.
- Window well covers (the clear plastic domes) can affect how you mount blinds. If the cover sits against the window, there may not be room for an outside-mount blind.
- Inside mount is usually best for window-well windows since the frame is recessed and outside mounting looks awkward.
Basement bedroom requirements in Ontario
If your basement has a legal bedroom, Ontario Building Code requires an egress window of a certain minimum size. Your blinds need to work with this window, not against it.
Key considerations:
Avoiding mould on basement blinds
Even with moisture-resistant materials, condensation can still form on and around basement windows. Here is how to keep things under control:
- Wipe down blinds monthly during humid months (May through September in Ontario)
- Run a dehumidifier in the basement, especially in summer. Keep humidity below 50 percent.
- Check for gaps between the blind and the window frame where condensation can pool
- Open blinds during sunny hours to let air circulate and dry out any moisture
- Do not block HVAC returns with blinds that extend to the floor
