Start with the ones facing the water and any room over a cold floor. In a newer unit with sealed double glazing the gain is smaller, so we often do the main living glass and the primary bedroom and leave interior-facing rooms on something simpler. A bathroom or a hallway window rarely repays the cell structure. Two rooms done properly beat a thinner shade spread across nine windows.

More than people expect. A light-filtering white or oyster keeps a north room usable on a grey afternoon and still blocks the sightline. Mid grey or taupe reads calmer against the light coming off the water but takes real brightness out of the room. Blackout cells belong in bedrooms. Hold the sample at the actual window near midday, because the colour on a card is never the colour on the glass.

Height is easier, because a workroom can shorten a cellular shade if the cells and the rails survive the trip. Measure the sill projection before you decide. A wide cellular shade stacks about six to eight centimetres tall when it is fully raised, and on a deep sill that stack lands right where a cushion or a plant wants to be.
