Depends what is wrong with them. Builder shades are usually single cell in a stock width, cut down rather than made to the opening, which is why you see light down the sides. If yours fit and lift properly, keep them and spend the money on rooms that have nothing at all. If they are short, crooked or sagging, a made-to-measure shade is a different product at that window.

Cellular takes a motor fine. It sits in the headrail rather than a tube, runs off a rechargeable battery pack and pairs to the same remote as a motorized roller. It does cost more per shade than motorizing a roller. We suggest it for high windows and for rooms where you want everything moving together, and leave the cordless lift on shades you can reach.

Very little of it. The fabric compresses into a stack of a few centimetres plus the headrail, so a two metre drop packs down to roughly 9 to 12 cm at the top. Double cell stacks a little deeper than single. On a tall window that is nothing. On a short basement window it eats a real share of the glass, so we mount above the opening where the wall allows.

Better than the chain it replaces, with one habit to learn. You lift the bottom rail with a hand in the middle of it and the spring holds the shade wherever you let go. Grabbing one corner and yanking is what puts a shade out of level over the years. On a wide shade use both hands. Anyone tall enough to reach the rail can work it, which is most of the reason we fit them.
