Usually yes. The wall above the window carries a rod perfectly well if the fixing hits the header or uses toggles rated for the load, and that keeps the drill out of the slab entirely. A ceiling mount is what forces the issue, and we only go there when the drop demands it. Tension rods hold sheers and very little else.

Not after dark. A sheer reads as privacy in daylight because the bright side is outside, and that reverses the moment you switch a lamp on. At night a lit room behind a sheer is visible from across the street. Layer the sheer with a lined panel, or run a blind behind it. Downtown sightlines are short and neighbouring windows sit close.

A flat wave or a simple pinch pleat. Both hang in a tidy vertical line and keep the eye moving up, which a low room needs. Skip anything swagged or heavily topped. We hang the track at the ceiling line and take the panels to the floor, so the fabric reads as one uninterrupted drop rather than a band across the wall.

It helps at the edges, which is where old windows leak. A lined panel that runs past the frame on both sides and reaches the floor slows the cold air spilling down the glass. A short curtain over a radiator does the opposite and pushes warm air straight out the window. For insulation at the glass itself, pair the drapery with a cellular shade.
