A swing door needs the track mounted above and outside the opening so the vanes clear the door as it moves. Inside the frame the door will catch them every time. We measure the swing arc before writing the order, and where a handle sits proud we allow extra projection on the brackets. It works well once those two details are right.

Below grade the problem is usually the opposite of glare. A walkout facing north under trees can feel dark all day, so we go with a light fabric vane and a high openness rather than the PVC most basements get. Tilted open, they let what light there is come through. Closed at night they still give the room its privacy.

Cold air and damp boots are hard on a lower-level door, and PVC handles both without marking. Fabric vanes cope too, but they show salt and mud where a person brushes past. If the door is the one everyone uses in January, we spec PVC on the traffic side and can run fabric on a second door elsewhere in the house.

A light chain links the vane weights so the whole set moves as one and stops swinging in a draft. It sits at the bottom hem rather than hanging loose, which is a different thing from a lift cord. On the wand-operated blinds we fit there is no lift cord at all. If you would rather have no chain either, the weights work on their own.
