A thin line of light along each side is normal on any inside-mounted shade, and it shows more in an old frame that is out of square. Where a bedroom needs real darkness we fit side channels, or we mount outside the opening and run the shade past the frame by several centimetres. In a heritage bedroom that difference is worth having.

That is one of the better cases for a honeycomb. Heat coming through the glass gets held in the cells instead of the room, and a light-coloured face reflects some of it before it arrives. Yes, and the mount decides how it looks. Inside the frame the shade drops to the seat and stops there, which keeps the woodwork visible and lets you sit without fabric behind your head. An outside mount would cover the seat back instead. For a built-in bench in a heritage room, the inside mount is nearly always the right call.

Cordless shades hold by friction inside the lift mechanism, so the shade stays wherever you leave it on the window. There is no cord lock to click into place. Over years that tension can soften and the shade drifts down a little, which is adjustable rather than terminal. Motorized versions hold on the motor brake and do not drift at all.
