A little more than a flat blind, and less than people hope. The cells hold air, and air is a poor conductor of sound, so a closed double-cell shade takes some of the high end out of tire and siren noise. Low rumble comes straight through. In a bedroom on a busy road, a lined drapery over the shade is what actually changes the room. The shade alone is a small improvement you would have to listen for.

Up to a point. Cellular fabric is light, so width matters less than weight and reach, and shades over about 2.4 metres wide start to bow slightly at the bottom rail. The bigger issue is operating it. On a stair window we either fit a motor or leave the shade in a fixed position at a height that works and treat it as a filter rather than something you adjust.

Nearly always. Uneven lift comes from the internal cords slipping in the head rail, or from one cord stretching more than the other, and both are a restring rather than a replacement. We take the shade down, redo the cord path and set the tension. Cells that have been crushed by a pet or a vacuum do not come back, but the mechanism itself stays serviceable for years.

At the edges, yes. An inside-mounted shade leaves a few millimetres at each side, and on a corded lift there are small holes through the fabric where the cords run. A blackout cellular has those holes sealed and the fabric itself passes nothing, so what remains is the perimeter. Mounting outside the opening with a generous overlap gets a nursery genuinely dark. Inside mount plus a lined drapery gets you there too.
