The costs are weight, which the rod has to carry, and dry cleaning for the life of the panel.

A hand made heading does not, because the pleat is stitched through a stiffened band rather than gathered onto a strip of tape. What does change is the cloth between the pleats, which relaxes and hangs a little fuller with age, and that generally flatters the panel. The headings that go soft are the taped ones, and once the tape has lost its shape there is no repair worth doing.

After, if the floor level is changing at all, and refinishing usually takes a millimetre or two off. Shortening a panel later is a straightforward workroom job. Lengthening one is not, because a lined pleated panel cannot grow without a seam across the face that you will see from the doorway forever.
