Privacy is not the reason to hang them out here. Sheers soften light coming off open ground, which is harsher than most people expect on a snow covered field in March, and they take the hard edge off a bare window at night. They also stop a lit room feeling like a fishbowl even with nobody outside. If the view is the point and the light is not harsh, skip them.

On a window where the view is the reason you bought the house, yes. A holdback set about two thirds of the way down the panel and just outside the frame pulls fabric clear of the glass and gives the fold a shape. Set it too high and the panel bunches at the top. Tie-backs in matching fabric are the softer version. Neither suits a panel you open and close every day.

On an exposed country wall, it is the one upgrade we push. Interlining is a soft layer sewn between the face fabric and the lining, and it does two things. It gives an ordinary cloth the weight to hang in deep folds like something far more expensive, and it puts real insulation across a cold window at night. The trade-off is that an interlined panel is heavy, and it is dry-clean only for the rest of its life.

Three things, usually. Weights sewn into the hem corners, a hem depth of around 100 mm so the fabric carries some mass at the bottom, and a few days dressed into folds with a soft tie while the panel learns its shape. Draughts off a cold window will still move a light unlined panel around. In a genuinely draughty room, a lined panel with corner weights is the version that stays put.
