Three percent, or five at the outside. On an unshaded west wall a ten percent screen still lets enough through that you squint at the sun between four and six in summer. Three percent keeps the field readable as a clear image and takes the heat edge off the glass. It also reads darker from inside than people expect, so we leave samples hanging against the actual window before anyone commits.

A little, if it stays down all night. The blind holds room air away from the glass, the pane runs colder, and moisture lands there rather than somewhere else in the house. Raising it 100 mm overnight lets air move across the glass. The real fix is upstream: run the exhaust fans, hold indoor humidity near 35 percent through winter, and expect old single glazing to sweat regardless of what hangs in front of it.

Rooms over a garage run cold and bright, and they usually have small awning or slider windows set high in the wall. A light filtering roller on a slim bracket fits those without eating the frame. Chain length matters more than fabric here, because you are reaching over a desk to work it. We size the chain to finish at hand height rather than the standard drop, and a cassette closes the gap at the top in a room that is already cool.

A twenty to thirty window house is a full day with two installers, sometimes two half days if a finished third floor is involved. Nothing gets cut on site. Everything arrives sized to your openings, so the day is bracket, clip, level and test. What slows a country job down is access: a long driveway during a thaw, and rooms full of furniture that has to move first. Clear the window walls and we are out sooner.
