A pelmet hides the track completely and closes off the gap at the top of the panels, which stops warm air rolling down behind the fabric and out along the floor. In an average room it eats wall and makes the window look shorter than it is. We work out the depth from the drop rather than a standard size, because a box that is too deep is the usual mistake.

A properly made heading holds, because the pleat is sewn through a stiffened buckram band rather than just gathered and hoped for. What loosens is the fabric between the pleats, which relaxes and hangs a little fuller after a few seasons. That is generally an improvement. The headings that collapse are the ones with a thin tape and a hook, common on ready made panels, and there is not much to be done for those.

The lining, and a shape rather than a colour. A lined panel shows its white or ivory back to the glass, so a row of houses reads evenly from outside no matter what is happening inside. Unlined panels are the ones that glow, and a strong colour will read from the sidewalk once the lamps are on. That is the argument for lining a front room even where the sun does not demand it.

They hold more than a bare window does, and the question is really whether they will get cleaned. A smooth tight weave sheds dust and takes an upholstery brush in minutes, so it stays clean because cleaning it is easy. A chenille or a loose slub traps everything and then sits for years waiting on a dry cleaner. Do the leading edge and the hem monthly and the rest matters much less than people think.
