We set the track far enough forward that the panels clear the brick reveal and any pipework, and we run it past the opening at each side so fabric is off the glass when it is open. Where the deck is corrugated steel we fix into the flutes or into a batten spanning them.

They are the easiest change you can make. Hard floors, brick and a concrete deck give sound nothing to land on, and a wall of lined fabric absorbs a fair amount of the reflection that makes conversation tiring in a big room. Fuller panels do more than flat ones because the folds present more surface. It will not soundproof you from outside. It changes how the room sounds inside.

Blackout lined panels get a room very dark on their own when they overlap the opening well past each side and reach the floor. Light comes around the edges, not through good lining. A blind under the drapery closes those edges and gives you a daytime setting that does not mean dragging curtains across. Most people end up wanting both once they have lived with one.

Keep the hem just clear of the floor rather than breaking on it, so nothing drags where a dog lies down or a vacuum runs. Choose a fabric you can spot clean, and remember that pleated lined panels are a dry clean item while an unlined cotton or linen can go through a cold wash. If claws are a worry, a tighter weave holds up better than a loose one.
