Yes. Every motor stores an upper limit, a lower limit and a favourite position, so one press takes the blind to the height you use most. On a tall loft window that is often halfway, covering the lower panes and leaving the top glass clear. We set the limits at install, and they can be reset from the remote in about a minute if you change your mind about where it stops.

The motor comes out of the tube and a new one goes in. The fabric, the brackets and the tube stay where they are, so it is a service call rather than a new blind. Tube motors are simple pieces of hardware, and most of what we see is a battery reaching the end of its life rather than the motor failing, and batteries are replaceable on their own.

It is usually the better idea, because there is no chain to climb and nothing hanging beside the glass. The motor stops if the bottom bar meets something on the way down, so a cat in the way is a stopped blind rather than a damaged one. What we would avoid is a light bottom bar on a sill a cat lives on, since the bar takes the knocks and a heavier one stays straight.

It earns its keep more than in a room with a door. In an open plan you cross the whole floor to reach the glass, and a blackout blind over the bed area gets worked twice a day. A remote on the nightstand removes that walk. On one small window it is hard to justify. On a wall of glass you cover every night, the difference in daily use is obvious.
