Closed, yes, with the vanes overlapped and turned away from the street. There is a small gap where one vane laps the next, and at night with lights on behind you that gap is where a silhouette shows. Turning the vanes so the overlap faces the room rather than the glass closes it down. A blackout fabric vane does the rest. Sheer vanes will not, after dark.

A wand for anything you use daily. You twist it to turn the vanes and push them along the track by hand or with the same wand, so no loop of chain hangs at the side. A chain and cord set is quicker on very wide runs where walking the vanes across gets tedious. With small children in the home the wand is the only version we recommend.

A closed run of fabric vanes slows the cold air rolling off the glass and pooling at the floor, which is the part you feel sitting nearby. It is not insulation, because air passes freely at the top of the track and between the vanes. If the door itself leaks, weatherstripping the frame does more than any covering. Verticals make the room feel less raw. They do not fix a bad door.
