We would not do it. That rail was screwed into strapping to carry a few kilograms of framed art, not a pair of lined panels that get pulled twice a day. What we do instead is fix through or just above the rail into the timber behind, or take the track onto the window casing. Light stationary sheers on hooks are the exception, since they weigh almost nothing.

Under a lined pair, yes, unless it is supported. A 28 millimetre steel or wood rod carries about two metres between brackets before you see a dip, and it is the fabric weight that pulls it down. The answer is a centre bracket, which sounds like it would block the panels and does not: the rings pass one side and the panel is drawn to the other. On anything past three metres we would use a track instead and skip the argument.

We do the filling, you do the paint. Old brackets in lath and plaster often pull a small crater when they come out, especially where somebody used the wrong anchor twenty years ago, so we cut the loose edges back and fill flush as part of taking the hardware down. Matching a hundred year old paint colour is a job for you or your decorator. Where the new brackets land close to the old holes, we set them to cover rather than beside them.

Move the fabric away from the glass. A rod or track standing 10 to 12 centimetres off the wall gives the panel room to hang clear, and finishing the hem above the sill keeps it out of any water that collects. Wet lining marks and eventually mildews. Ventilating properly and keeping the house around 35 percent relative humidity through winter deals with the cause rather than the symptom.
