They do. Fabric collects whatever is in the air, and in a unit where the kitchen opens straight onto the living space, that is every meal. A range hood that vents outside rather than recirculating makes the biggest difference. Airing panels on a dry breezy day helps. If somebody in the house cooks seriously every night, pick a washable unlined fabric from the start.

It can, and this is one of the few cases where we suggest a permanent stationary treatment. A sheer panel left closed across the glass all the time softens that wall into light instead of brick, and you keep the daylight. A working pair over the top gives you full cover at night.
