Around three metres is where a roller tops out in practice, because past that the tube starts to bow at its centre and the fabric wanders off line as it rolls. A heavier tube buys more width, but the roll gets awkward to operate by hand. On a five metre wall, two or three shades sharing one fascia is the better build. Each one runs easily, and from the yard the line across the head still reads as a single piece.

Set it up for the dog and it will. Leave the hem a few centimetres above the sill so a nose pushing behind it does not bend the bottom rail, and pick a vinyl-faced or screen fabric rather than a soft weave, since those wipe clean instead of staining. Cats are harder, because a hanging chain is a toy. A motorized tube or a cordless shade takes the temptation away completely.

One visit, normally. Fifteen to twenty windows keeps a crew busy most of a day, including taking down whatever is up there now. What slows a job down is never the blinds, it is access: furniture against the glass, a room that has to be emptied first, or a window we cannot reach without moving a bed. A metre of clear floor at each window keeps the day on schedule.

A roller needs a level head and a bottom rail that hangs square, so a raked top is a real problem. We either mount the roller on the horizontal part and leave the triangle open, or fit a fixed panel in the triangle if that light genuinely has to stop. A shaped shade following the rake can be made, but it cannot roll up. Be certain you want it permanent before ordering one.
