We mount above and outside the opening so the vanes clear the door handles and the swing. The headrail extends far enough past each side for the whole stack to sit on the wall beside the opening, clear of the glass. Verticals suit outswing doors best, and for a pair of inswing doors we sometimes split the draw to the centre.

That is the main reason people choose them here. The vanes rotate through about 180 degrees, so you can hold a partial angle that blocks direct sun while the view through the gaps stays open. Rooms looking into mature trees usually sit somewhere around 45 degrees for most of the day and only close fully at night.

Fabric vanes at nose height take the worst of it, and PVC wipes down more easily if your dog uses that door. Fabric vanes do come out of the carriers for washing, though they need to dry flat or they curl. Either material lets you swap the bottom few vanes on their own, with no need to redo the whole run.

The chain needs a tension device screwed into the wall or the floor, which holds the loop taut and stops it forming any slack. We fit one on every chain-operated blind we install. Better still, ask for wand control on doors a child can reach, since a wand has no loop at all.
