Usually not, and most people leave them bare. A transom sits high enough that nobody sees in and the light it drops lands on the ceiling rather than in your eyes. The exception is a west wall, where late sun comes through a transom at exactly head height on the far side of the room. If that is the case we shade it, and it takes its own blind rather than sharing with the window below.

More than people expect. A blackout cloth on a three-metre blind rolls into a bundle around 10 cm across once it is fully up, and that sits over the top of the glass unless the blind is mounted above the opening. On a great-room window we usually go outside mount for exactly that reason and gain back the full height.

Call it eight years on that wall against twelve or fifteen anywhere else in the house. Ultraviolet is what ends a roller fabric, and a west great room takes more of it in an afternoon than a north bedroom sees in a week. You see it as a slight yellowing first, then the hem loses its stiffness. The tube, brackets and clutch outlast several fabrics, so it is a re-cover rather than a new blind.

Yes. Rolling the blind up 30 or 40 cm gives room to reach the latch and swing a sash open, and the screen sits behind the fabric where it is unaffected. On tall great-room windows we set the chain length so the blind works from standing height instead of reaching over furniture. If one window gets opened every evening, point it out during the measure and that blind goes on the casing so the cloth hangs clear.
