Outward swing is the easy case, since nothing sweeps into the vanes. We mount above the trim on the wall, run the track wide enough that the stack sits clear of the glass, and hold the vanes about 15 mm off the door face so handles and deadbolts have room to work. Inward-swinging doors are the ones that force a compromise, usually an outside mount set high and wide.

Yes, and there are two versions. A moulded plastic valance clips on and is what came with most builder blinds, which is exactly why it reads cheap. A fabric-wrapped pelmet made in the same cloth as the vanes hides the track properly and gives the head of the opening a finished line. On a ceiling-fixed track there is often nowhere to hang one, so the track finish becomes the choice instead.

Cover the door, stop short at the window. Vanes hanging in front of a live radiator hold the heat against the glass and cook the bottom of the fabric over a few winters, and PVC will take a permanent bow from it. We run the track across the door only and put something that stops at the sill on the window beside it, matched in colour so the wall still reads as one treatment.

Barely, and it is worth being clear about that. Vanes hang loose with gaps between them, so cold air moving down the glass slides right past. What you gain is a broken sightline to a cold surface. If the draft is the actual complaint, a lined drapery panel over the track, or a honeycomb shade on the window next to it, does far more of the work.
