West-facing rooms here get direct sun from about three o'clock until it drops behind the rooflines. We spec a tighter sheer band, around 3 percent openness, for those windows. It cuts the flare without darkening the room, and the solid bands close the rest of the way when the sun is at its lowest. East-facing bedrooms can take a 10 percent band and stay bright.

Short and wide is a normal shape in the split-level homes here and it takes a zebra blind fine. The limit is the roll rather than the width. A shallow drop leaves less fabric on the tube, so we use a smaller tube and a lighter bottom bar and the blind still hangs straight. We measure the drop at both ends, because stair openings often sit off level.

Wood frames from that era are solid and take a bracket screw well, which makes an inside mount the first choice. Where a window has an aluminum liner or the frame is too shallow, we go outside mount into the drywall with anchors rated above the blind's weight. We check the depth at the measure and tell you which way each window is going before install day.

Open windows bring in pollen from the mature trees around Chinguacousy Park, and it settles along the top edge of the bands more than anywhere else. A vacuum brush along the fabric once a month clears it. For a mark on a solid band, use a barely damp cloth and let the blind dry fully down. Soaking the polyester stretches it and the two layers stop lining up.
