Two practical ones. Most handsets have a lock, a long press on a recessed button that freezes the keys, which is enough for a child who has found the buttons. The other is where the remote lives, so we fit the wall bracket high and out of the way rather than leaving the handset on a side table. Nothing gets hurt by the pressing, incidentally. The motor stops at its limits no matter how often it is sent there.

A replacement pairs to the motors in a couple of minutes, and we can walk you through it over the phone. In the meantime, if there is a hub in the house, the app still runs everything. Without a hub and without a remote, the blind stays exactly where it is, since these motors have no pull cord and no manual clutch. That is the honest trade-off for a cord-free window.

By labelling it at handover, which is a two minute job we do before leaving and almost nobody does for themselves later. Each channel on the handset gets a room or a window written on the card that lives with the remote, and the last channel usually runs the whole set together. Where a room has two banks of glass on different walls, we split them across separate channels instead of one, because a single button that moves everything is the arrangement people stop using.

Not for the motor, which is sealed inside the tube and never sees weather. The nuisance is the fabric. A blind hanging in a breeze swings against the frame, the hem bar eventually marks the trim, and on a windy day a lowered blind will bang. A weighted hem settles most of it. So does raising the blind before you go out, which is the one thing a remote makes easy.
