Inside mount looks tidier and keeps the casing visible, but it needs around ninety millimetres of depth for the track and carriers. Most windows on these streets do not have that, so outside mount is the usual answer. The track goes on the wall above the opening and the vanes overlap the frame by seventy-five millimetres or more each side. Outside mount also parks the stack past the glass, which matters if you want the window fully clear.

A stationary panel at each side is the usual fix. Hang it on a track mounted higher than the vertical headrail so the two do not collide, and keep the panels off the stack side so they never interfere with the door. That breaks up the run of vanes and gives the opening an edge. Fabric vanes in a warm tone help as well, and they cost nothing over standard grey PVC.

PVC will and fabric will not. Vinyl vanes take the swing from below freezing in January to thirty degrees in July without changing shape, and they shrug off the damp that collects out there in the shoulder seasons. Fabric vanes go limp along the bottom edge after a couple of winters of that. Keep the track clear of any standing water on the sill, and expect to wipe the vanes down in spring once everything has thawed and settled.

Most PVC vanes are the same material right through, so what you see inside is what the street sees. Fabric vanes are the ones to check, since several ranges are backed with a white or off white liner, which is done on purpose so a house reads consistently from outside no matter what colour each room has chosen. If you want a deep colour visible from the sidewalk, ask before ordering. On a rear window facing your own yard, none of it matters.
