They do different jobs. A plain roller is one fabric and one decision, up or down. A zebra adds a middle setting where the sheer bands align and you get filtered daylight with some view left. If a room only ever needs covered or clear, the roller is simpler, cheaper and comes in more fabrics. If you sit in that room all day, the middle setting is the one people end up living in.

They work down there, with the mount doing most of the thinking. Those openings sit high in the wall and are wider than they are tall, so we run the blind outside the opening on the wall face and gain a few centimetres of glass back. Keep the drop short enough that the bottom rail is not sitting on the sill ledge. A chain on the reachable side matters more here than the fabric does.

There is a floor. Under about thirty centimetres wide, the tube, clutch and cassette eat most of the opening and the shade looks clumsy doing it. A small bathroom or basement sash usually goes better with a plain roller or a cellular shade. Where you want the whole house matching, we sometimes mount the little one outside the frame instead, which gives the mechanism room and hides the trim.

Paint first, blinds after. Fresh trim wants a couple of days to cure before brackets go into it, and a painter working around installed hardware leaves marks on the fabric. Flooring is the other one. If the floor is coming up, get it down before we measure, since a new build-up changes the drop on anything that hangs low. Windows themselves get replaced before the measure, never after.
