We usually mount outside the opening on basement windows and let the fabric hang past the frame, which keeps the glass clear and covers a rough concrete edge. The chain gets shortened so it is not pooling on the floor.

That is almost always the fabric tracking sideways on the tube rather than a fault in the mechanism. Roll it all the way up, leave it a minute, then run it down slowly and see if it corrects. If it does not, the fabric needs resetting on the tube, and that is a service call rather than a new blind. It happens more on wide blinds that get pulled from one corner instead of the middle.

With the bands aligned so the sheers overlap, yes, they will see shapes and movement. Sheer fabric works one way and after dark the bright side is the inside. Offsetting the bands so the solid strips meet puts a real barrier there. If you want soft light in the evening but nothing see-through, we either pair the zebra with a lined panel or spec a heavier solid band from the start.

It does, and on a zebra it shows sooner than on a plain roller because the sheer sections hold it in the weave rather than sitting on a flat face. You get a slow yellowing rather than a mark. A range hood that vents outside is the fix. Failing that, keep the blind rolled up while you cook and wipe the solid bands twice a year, accepting that the sheers stay as they are.
